Moments of the streets
Walking beneath the Golden Jubilee Bridge in London I aimed my camera more or less straight into the sky. Out of the camera the result wasn´t much to brag about, to put it mildly.
But nevertheless I dumped the RAW file into Lightroom, and goofed around with colours, exposure, shadows and a lot of other things. Then I cropped and desaturating the whole mess. And this is what it turned into …
We´ve had a long, and unusual bright, autumn in the northern parts of Europe, with so many mornings emerging in vivid sunshine. Demanding, from a photographical point of view, but also full of opportunities to capitalize on.
Haven´t I talked about backlight before? Of course I have! One of the most pronounced effect is the halo. It´s not at all difficult to create, and the effects can be stunning.
So here is how it goes: Remember to bring your camera! Place yourself in a position where your subject, especially a person, is between yourself and a low, hard light source. Underexpose about 3 stops. Click! And there you go!
Don’t know what I mean by “underexpose about 3 stops?” Ask me! I’m more than happy to tell.
With their garments embellished all over by mother-of-pearl buttons, the “pearlies” are arguably one of the most colourful examples of working class culture in Britain.
This “saucepan lid” (=kid, for those of us not being fluently in cockney rhyming slang …) is the Pearly Princess of Highgate. I was fortunate enough to capture her at this years Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival in London. Isn’t she adorable?
Out the other night seeking the streets for whatever could emerge, I heard a distinctive noise coming from Akersgata, a street leading northbound from the central parts of Oslo. Down the hill rushed two men on their skateboards. As this chap approached, he crouched down and swerved off to his left. Quite a risky métier, I think, skateboarding at high velocity in the dark.
But at least he had put his helmet on …
