It’s all about the eyes

Metro_expression_1.2 Faces can be intriguing, especially peoples expressions. And of course, the eyes are crucial. One afternoon, taking the underground home, I sat on the folding seat opposite this guy. Browsing the carriage, I became aware of the solemn expression on his face.

So I placed the camera in my lap, removed the lens cap, and without looking through the viewfinder, went for a single shot. I’ve done this before, and for the most I ended up with something utterly rubbish. This time, however, I think I might have caught the moment.

I´m not much of a wildlife photographer. It simply isn´t my cup of tea. But I have a certain thing about birds. Maybe it’s because flying in a sense represent the ultimate freedom. I don’t know. Anyway, last summer, we went for a holiday in England, on the canals. At the stern of the narrowboat, heading into the Milton Keynes area, I discovered this fella flying by.

Fortunately, I had my telephoto lens mounted, and thanks to a bit of luck (and the Nikon engineers …) I managed to get this shot. I know, it isn´t exactly super sharp, but considering the ground beneath me (… i.e. the boat) was moving and the bird flying, I think I got away with it reasonably well.

Stepping into the light

One evening, being out shooting street photography, I drifted into the National Theatre Railway Station. On the watch for candid situations, I strolled between the main and the west entrances, without finding anything special. Feeling a bit disappointed I turned back, but going down the escalators, I realised that people in front of me transformed into quite interesting objects the moment they stepped onto the platform. So I went up and down again a couple of times, carefully aiming my camera at the transition point.

The van

It´s no big secret that I love Grunerloekka (Norwegian: “Grünerløkka”). This old working class district situated right east of the river is now developed into a trendy area with nice bars, cafes and restaurants. And of course, in the evening also the kitchen vans appears. Suddenly something in the eyes of this guy, as he was preparing for the night owls to swarm in for coffee, soft drinks, and soup, gripped me. Fortunately I had my camera ready.

Flautist

A while ago, I came across this man eagerly playing the flute at the concourse of one of Oslos railways stations. It was rush hour, and people mostly hurried on leaving him unnoticed, except the guy in front of the stairs.
